TV Packages - Glasgow Caledonian University

These two pieces were made for my MA project. I attended the Luss Highland games, after liaising with the event organisers.
It was a challenging but rewarding day. I had to battle intermittent downpours with a large camera and tripod, while also setting up interviews/shots in a bustling field with multiple events going on.
The interviews were conducted in small gaps, in a very busy day. I had to be ready at the drop of a hat to set up the camera & mic, and think of engaging questions - often with very little preparation time or notice.
I am proud of how the videos turned out. If I was to film these again today, I would:
ideally have more time for research - I knew next to nothing about tug o’ war, as this was an unplanned/impulsive piece
have more confidence now to ask for the shots I want. At the time, this was all very new for me, and it was hard not to feel like you were getting in the way. I am now more assured and know I could get better shots
have clearer voice overs - they were recorded under a blanket, as that was the best I could do at home

These videos (Blythswood Art Festival and Jump Ship Brewery) are two of the first TV packages I ever made. While they are far from perfect, they highlight my natural eye for filming and how far my skills have developed.
I am proud of my scripting, especially my closing lines, and my ability to match pictures to words.
However, if I was making these today I would:
focus on clarifying my audio
avoid jump cuts (Jump Ship)
avoid abrupt audio cuts/abrupt interview endings
avoid audibly agreeing from behind the camera during interviews
I am also far more confident with light balancing and stabilising shots. I am also more confident doing pieces to camera.

This piece was made to accompany a scripted news voicer - meaning it has no sound or interviews.
I think it is very cute, and shows my understanding of framing and depth of field.
Social Videos from Now Ayrshire Radio
To celebrate Scotland playing in the World Cup, we sent a piper out to a listener’s home to ‘wake up’ the street. We didn’t know where we were going until we set off, and were pleased but cautious to find out there was a primary school there too. We knew this meant it would be busy with the school run but were wary of filming children’s faces/uniforms without consent.
Luckily, through Now Ayrshire and from recording our School of the Week segment, I knew the Head Teacher and so gained permission to film pupils responsibly.
I focussed on public reactions, asking permission for specific faces seen. The video was to be celebratory, joyful, and full of community. I am confident that I managed to get that across.
I am particularly proud of the shot of the children climbing up on the school wall while the piper played. It shows their excitement, without being square on with their faces.
If I was to film this again, I’d have kept my camera recording the whole time, as I missed a few reactions, however I am pleased with the end result.
The video gained 105k viewed on Facebook.
This was a mammoth project; however, I loved it. It is one of the longest videos I’ve made, and it was made only a month into my time at Now Ayrshire.
The Station Controller came up with a competition for two listener couples to win a dinner at The Stravaig, hosted/served by our breakfast presenters.
It needed to be funny, with multiple stunts and reaction shots, but also exhibit the food.
It was a very stressful filming day, but I stayed calm under pressure. We wanted to film all of our stunts but not intrude too much on the winners’ meals. As a solo camera, it was really challenging to film everything that happened and get reactions. The shots took a great deal of planning, or working backwards.
As I was new to my job, I was not confident enough to be strict with the presenters or the station controller (who was also filming, but mainly unusable footage). This meant that many stunts that I had planned, or shots I wanted didn’t go as planned, and that I was having to avoid filming the other camera.
I now have more confidence and can take control of shoots.
The editing was great fun, I storyboarded based on the footage I had, and utilised background music to differentiate between scenes/settings.
While my skills have greatly improved since this video, I am very proud of how this piece came together.
This video was part of our Greasy Pole build up. It was important to showcase the presenters’ personalities, while keeping it snappy and engaging.
The team had been on a climbing wall, and I knew I wanted to interview them about the experience. I could have simply interviewed them together, but I thought it would be funnier to do solo interviews with the others ‘training’ behind them.
Finding background music to match the vibe of the video took some searching, but I was pleased with what I used.
This video did well on socials, and the I feel it fit the tone perfectly.
This video was a new challenge for me as I had never filmed a food/menu video before. I researched Western House Hotel, as well as speaking to their manager and Now Ayrshire’s marketing team, to decide the tone the video should have.
It was decided the video should showcase the food, but be fun and show the presenter’s personalities. I focussed on creating attractive shots of the plates and filming b-roll of the presenters as they ate. I then scripted the voice over and put it all together.
If I was to film this again, I would focus on getting move varied shots of the food, and close ups of forks/hands picking bits up. It was difficult to film a variety of content though as I was the sole camera. Based on these limitations, I am proud of what I filmed.
The text overlays and effects were influenced by our brand guidelines (font, placement, spacing). Making sure all the overlays had had equal effects took time and attention.
This video was part of a much bigger and fantastic radio weekend. Ali & Michael broadcast live from Michael’s wife’s farm, from a lambing barn!
This video was filmed the day before the breakfast show, along with multiple other videos which we wanted to post alongside the live show. I had to separate the audios from the edited videos, and they were played out on the show as if happening live.
The show gained a very big live following online as well as high listener numbers, so posting the videos in tandem was definitely the right thing, but it meant I had a lot of work to do in one night.
The editing in this video is minimal, because of time restraints and, because I believe our audience wanted to watch the full process. The blur at the start is an example of time restraints - as I just placed an overlay instead adding a real blur/pixelation. The video also originally ended with the song ‘You’re Beautiful’ by James Blunt when posted.
I am proud of the planning and work that went into these two days of filming. editing, and radio producing. I am also proud that I didn’t wince/make noise or look away during the birth, as it was quite intense.
This video was to announce Kara as our final Greasy Pole team member. Kara is a wrestler and power lifter, so I knew this video had to reflect her personality.
This filming day was so much fun, we had lots of ideas and a great time recording them all. Editing the clips together and getting/maintaining the comedy timing took time.
The main challenge was trying not to film other gym users or intrude on their workout. I managed this by taking time to set up shots, utilising angles and zoom, and reviewing footage.
The follow up video also had some great shots - my favourite being a tight shot on Amanda-Jean doing pull ups, which zooms out to show her on Kara’s shoulders.
Planning the socials for the Greasy Pole took two months of work. I had to map out when team members would be revealed, work to everyone’s busy schedules, and plan activities for them to do:
pole dancing class
climbing centre days
visiting a wood supplier
gym session
This video was made for J&D Pierce to showcase their IGNITE Welding Academy. I spoke with Now Ayrshire’s marketing team, and the head of skills and development at J&D Pierce to decide on the tone of the video.
I made the decision to approach this as an informative almost news-package-like piece.
After filming, I was informed that J&D Pierce were pleased with the video and impressed with my confidence and aptitude while filming. I knew what I wanted, and I was polite but sure in how I directed people.
This video is also an example of Now Ayrshire’s on-video branding. During my time as social media manager, I tried to encourage a removal of branding, and eventually ended up making them smaller. I am confident following branding guidelines, and I worked hard to keep everything within company colours and aligned, however I also understand that logos can be a hinderance on social media.
This was a fun video to film, which was recorded, edited, and posted on April Fools’ Day. This was challenging as I was busy, however it gained great traction. I think the tie into that morning’s game made it far more believable than a standard prank.
The filming required scripting, storyboarding, and managing three people. I left my phone as a hidden camera, and planted another presented in the office to film the room.
Having the two camera angles, as well as the shot of Ali from that morning’s game, makes the video more engaging.
This is a case where I would have liked to add subtitles, however due to time constraints I decided it was more important to get it out asap than format captions.
